When Ganesha High School teacher Kevin Tharpe tasked his advanced arts class to draw a portrait of a Black person who had influenced them, students didn’t have to think too hard.
Michael Jordan. Ruby Bridges. Rihanna.
These are a few of the artists and role models drawn by students and featured in a new portrait collection located at Hillcrest Retirement Community in La Verne. Titled “Our African American Influence,” the gallery is meant to showcase Black culture and its impact on everyday life.
