Haiti/Gender: Fanm Deside, 35 years promoting the rights of Haitian women

Marcia Moise

The feminist organization Fanm Deside celebrated its 35th anniversary on Friday, March 22, 2024, in a rather subdued atmosphere, considering the current situation in the country characterized by a climate of gang terror combined with the forced resignation of the de facto government of Ariel Henry, as observed by CaribeanTelevisionNetwork.

The occasion allowed the feminist members of the organization to review their accomplishments and identify future perspectives.

“Despite the tense climate in which we have been living in recent years, we are proud of our achievements,” said Marie-Ange Noël, coordinator of Fanm Deside.

Fanm Deside has achieved numerous accomplishments, particularly through awareness and training campaigns, advocacy, and most importantly, in supporting women and girls who are victims of gender-based violence, emphasized Marie-Ange Noël.

According to her, thanks to the support of Fanm Deside, women have been able to develop activities for their financial autonomy. It has also contributed to empowering women and building resilience in the face of climate change.

With 35 years of experience, Fanm Deside is a representative feminist organization that covers practically all the municipalities in the Grand Sud region. It also has focal points throughout the region.

To mark the 35th anniversary of the feminist organization Fanm Deside, a thanksgiving mass was celebrated in the Multipurpose Hall of the Diocese of Jacmel.

A heartfelt tribute was paid to the founders and other activists who have worked in promoting women’s rights in the country, particularly in the Grand Sud region.

It was also an opportunity to acknowledge the collaboration of international partner organizations of Fanm Deside throughout its existence.
