88 Haitian immigrants were returned to Haiti this Sunday, April 10, by the U.S. government. These compatriots were intercepted on the high seas 47 kilometers north of Sagua la Grande last Tuesday by the U.S. Coast Guard.
The migrants were aboard a makeshift sailboat coming from the Northwest Department. Among these 88 undocumented Haitians are 19 children, said the U.S. Embassy in Haiti in a message on its twitter account.
The travelers were handed over to the Haitian authorities in Cap-Haitien on Sunday, ZoomHaitiNews reporter in the North department noted.
Tired of the misery and insecurity raging in their country, more and more Haitians are trying to leave the country in search of a better life elsewhere, especially in the United States. However, they are constantly intercepted and turned away by the American authorities. Since August 2021, an average of 200 Haitian immigrants have been deported to Haiti by the administration of Joe Biden, who urges Haitians not to risk their lives on the high seas.
