Three new judges installed at the Jacmel public prosecutor’s office.
Anofaine Maître, Michel Dalexis and Jacky Jean, respectively judge and examining magistrate, were installed in the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the Jacmel Court of First Instance on Monday February 26, 2024.
The ceremony took place in the presence of a representative of the Conseil Supérieur du Pouvoir Judiciaire (CSPJ), Me Nader Désir, lawyers from the jurisdiction’s bar, members of civil society and others.
Mr. Auméreau Lainé, Dean a.i. of the Jacmel Court of First Instance, who presided over the ceremony, recalled that the court had been faced with a problem of an examining magistrate for over two years.
For his part, Me Nader Désir, representing the justices of the peace on the CSPJ, asked the three new magistrates to act according to the law, to refuse bribes, which could lead them into acts of corruption, which would harm the public. Mr Désir also demanded that the new magistrates do everything possible to respect the time limit set by law for investigating cases, in order to clear the department’s largest prison center.
In their speeches, the three new magistrates took the opportunity to congratulate the CSPJ for having chosen them from among the highly competent magistrates of the Jacmel jurisdiction.
They promised to apply the law in the interests of society, and to fight against impunity and corruption.
Barely installed, the new members of the judiciary already have their work cut out for them.
According to Jacmel’s Government Commissioner, Me Pierre-Willner Dormeville, more than 250 cases are awaiting processing, and he urges the new judges to avoid engaging in acts of malfeasance and to show courage in their decision-making.
