The government met this weekend with the textile workers’ unions to discuss their demands, proposing a minimum wage of 750 gourdes, half the amount demanded by the workers.
The trade unionist Dominique St-Eloi of the National Center of Haitian Workers (CNOHA), said that the strikers remain attached to the 1500 gourdes they demand because of the high cost of living.
The Superior Council of Wages (CSS), had recommended an adjustment of 625 gourdes, denounced by the workers of the National Company of Industrial Parks (SONAPI), and other agents of the private / public sectors.
On several occasions, the workers have taken to the streets of the capital to make their cry heard in the face of the indifference of the authorities who have done nothing to relieve them while the economic crisis affects them severely. They said that the government should not wait until it has initiated this movement to revise the minimum wage.
They announced the continuation of the demonstrations to reinforce the pressure on the government and obtain some improvement in their standard of living.
