The Haitian caucus in the U.S. Congress welcomes the establishment of the National Transitional Council by the instigators of the Montana Agreement.
Reacting on the ceremony organized Sunday at the Montana hotel, the founder of the caucus, the representative of the ninth district of Michigan, believes that it is important that the American president listens to the voice of Haitians.
“In Haiti, the National Transitional Council, established by the historic #MontanaAccord, was just sworn in. This member body represents what a true democracy looks like,” said a delighted Andy Levin, who took the opportunity to “…urge the Biden administration to listen to the Council. Haitians are organizing for their future, and they need to be heard,” he concluded in a note posted on his twitter account.
Composed of 5 members, the Haitian caucus in the U.S. Congress is one of the great supporters of the Montana Agreement, having brought together organizations from all key sectors of national life. On several occasions, this structure had urged the new administration of Joe Biden to support the Montana agreement. Joe Biden had difficulty in satisfying these demands. He preferred, to his representatives in Haiti, to support the de facto Prime Minister Ariel Henri who is showing himself more and more powerless in front of the deterioration of the living conditions of the Haitians.
The security situation continues to deteriorate with the unbridled rise in cases of kidnapping, robbery and rape among others. On the economic level, the situation is no different. The price of basic necessities continues to rise and the unemployment rate could not be higher.
Faced with this alarming situation, the promoters of the Montana Agreement hope to rally other sectors of national life, but also and above all, the international community in order to set up a transitional government. On December 12, 2021, they organized a high-level ceremony to present the national transition council.
The 44-member council is responsible for choosing the next president of the republic and the prime minister.
The ceremony was attended by members of several sectors, both national and international.
