Haitian Independence Day: EducNation shares a moment with the children of the Family Care orphanage

CTN News

“Bon jounen endepandans” is around this theme that EducNation celebrated, this Sunday, January 1, 2023, the 219th anniversary of Haiti’s independence with the children of the Family Care orphanage located in Caradeux in the district of Port-au-Prince. This day of celebration organized by EducNation was marked by, among other things, a brilliant presentation on the struggle that led to the abolition of slavery, but also by well-crafted cultural activities that created a friendly and special atmosphere that facilitated the children to express their individual talents and creativity.

During this important activity, Valery Jeff Benoit, a member of educNation, presented to the children the different steps that led to the abolition of slavery even before the proclamation of Haiti’s independence on January 1, 1804, because November 18, 1803, the day of the battle of Vertières, saw the victory of the indigenous army over the soldiers of Napoleon Bonaparte.

The speaker also insisted on the meaning of this celebration with, among other things, the appearance of the giraumou soup which was reserved only for slave owners. But, our ancestors would change the game after they obtained their freedom by making the giraumou soup a symbolic dish of their dignity, resilience and freedom, he explained while interacting with the participants. Valery Jeff Benoit points out that giraumou soup was the first meal shared by our ancestors after proclaiming the country’s independence and is therefore the first meal of the year. The giraumou soup was approved in 2021 by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity.

After this enriching presentation, the members of EducNation distributed soup to the children of the Family Care orphanage in order to promote living together and consolidate the ties, customs and traditions of Haiti, says Rolph Woodly, a member of the organization who expresses satisfaction with the conduct of the activity.
“Here at Family Care, we are very pleased to spend this wonderful time with the staff of EducNation. We thank EducNation for having chosen Family Care to organize such an activity that will leave an unforgettable memory for the children” says the president of the orphanage, Fritz Désir.

On the sidelines of this activity, the children in turn wished the entire educNation team happiness for the year 2023.
