For the first time, a Haitian woman will represent a district in the state of Florida in the U.S. Congress

Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick won the special election held this Tuesday, January 11, 2022 in Florida.

She will represent the 20th district of the state of Florida.
She defeated the Republican candidate Jason Mariner, according to projections made by CNN, thus consolidating the majority of the Democratic Party in the House of Representatives.
An attorney by profession, Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick is known as a successful entrepreneur in the state of Florida and is the president and chief executive officer of Trinity Health Care Services, a company that provides health care services to the community. She is the President and CEO of Trinity Health Care Services, a company that provides home health care in Miramar County.
Ms. McCormick’s election should allow the progressive group to increase their membership in the lower house.
During her campaign, she promised to work to regularize the situation of undocumented immigrants in the United States. She also promised to work to strengthen the Affordable Care Act, commonly known as ObamaCare.
During her campaign, she had the full support of the progressive group including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Rashida Tlaib. She won the primary in extremis with 5 votes more than her immediate opponent Dale Holness.

With her election, Sheila Cherfilus will complete the mandate of Alcee Hastings, who died in April 2021 following pancreatic cancer. She is expected to serve only one year in Congress before returning to the polls for a full term.
Born January 25, 1979 in Brooklin to Haitian parents, Sheilla Cherfilus McCormick holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Howard University. She also holds a law degree from the University of St. Thomas.
