This Thursday, a decisive step was taken in the modernization of the national airport sector. The Director General of Toussaint Louverture International Airport in Port-au-Prince officially presented, in the presence of local authorities and economic stakeholders from the North, the development plan for Cap-Haïtien International Airport.
This initiative, according to a government statement, is part of the strategic vision of Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé in favor of modern, resilient infrastructure that serves national competitiveness.
This large-scale project is not limited to a simple technical redevelopment. It carries the ambition to profoundly transform Haiti’s airport landscape, by equipping the country’s second-largest city with a modern hub capable of accommodating growing international traffic. The project aims to significantly improve reception capacity and passenger services, meet the sustained demand from both domestic and international travelers, and above all, make the Grand Nord a dynamic economic development hub, partially relieving the capital of a logistical and security pressure that has become untenable.
According to the government statement, this development plan is part of a broader dynamic of modernizing strategic infrastructure, aimed at strengthening national connectivity and projecting Haiti onto the regional stage as an accessible and reliable destination. “The presentation of this plan reflects the government’s will, under the leadership of the Prime Minister, to pursue structuring investments aimed at providing the country with modern, resilient infrastructure that meets international standards,” the official statement emphasizes. The State thus reaffirms its commitment to making transport infrastructure a major lever for openness and competitiveness.
This development project comes at a particularly favorable time, marked by encouraging news for Haiti’s aviation sector. Starting November 1, 2026, American Airlines will launch daily non-stop flights between Miami and Cap-Haïtien, becoming the first major U.S. airline to announce the resumption of regular service to Haiti. This decision is seen as a strong signal of confidence in the relative stability of the North and in the region’s economic potential. The flights, operated daily aboard Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, will depart Miami at 10:15 AM, arriving in Cap-Haïtien at 12:15 PM, with a return flight scheduled for 1:15 PM, landing in Miami at 3:15 PM.
The concurrence of these two announcements – the development plan and the resumption of American Airlines flights – is no coincidence. It reflects a clear political will to redeploy airport activity toward a region deemed more conducive to international exchanges, in a context where Port-au-Prince remains plagued by chronic insecurity. Cap-Haïtien, with its rich historical heritage and proximity to major agricultural and tourism hubs, appears as a credible and necessary alternative.
