The U.S. government is announcing 11,500 additional visas for “H-2B non-agricultural seasonal workers to nationals of North Central America and Haiti.”
The decision was made following the Summit of the Americas held in Los Angeles last week. A move aimed at “addressing labor shortages in key sectors of the U.S. economy and limiting irregular migration,” according to a State Department statement sent to ZoomHaitiNews on Monday. “These visas will be granted to nationals of the northern countries of Central America and Haiti for this fiscal year,” reads the State Department statement adding that “this measure is accompanied by new provisions for monitoring employers.”
Other measures were also taken during this activity that brought together the highest authorities of the continent. According to a resolution adopted by the participants, “Mexico will expand the existing border worker card program to 10,000 or even 20,000 additional beneficiaries. A program aimed at facilitating “greater labor mobility to meet the needs of employers in Mexico. Other countries including Honduras and El Salvador will be included in the program, the U.S. Department of State said.
