The Republic of Korea has announced a contribution of $6 million to support the United Nations’ humanitarian efforts in Haiti, according to a joint press release issued on January 29, 2025.

This funding, aimed at addressing the urgent needs of the Haitian people, will be equally distributed among UNICEF, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), with each organization receiving $2 million, according to a statement from UNICEF.

This financial support reflects South Korea’s commitment to the well-being of Haitian children and the strengthening of bilateral ties between the two countries. It will enable UNICEF to ensure access to safe learning environments for children, provide vital medical services, and protect young people from the consequences of conflict.

His Excellency LEE Sang Ryul, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to the Dominican Republic and also accredited to Haiti, stated: “Among other objectives, I hope this humanitarian support helps provide better healthcare and education for Haitian children, as South Korea has learned from its history and economic development that they represent the future of the country,” according to the statement.

This partnership “demonstrates South Korea’s trust in UNICEF and our unwavering commitment to the well-being of children affected by devastating crises in Haiti,” said Geeta Narayan, UNICEF Representative in Haiti, expressing her gratitude for this support. She emphasized that “this funding will allow UNICEF and its partners to provide Haitian children with essential services such as healthcare and education.” According to the UN official, these efforts are crucial “to ensure they are prepared to build a better future for Haiti.”

This donation from South Korea follows repeated calls from the UN Secretary-General for a significant increase in humanitarian aid to Haiti. Nearly half of the population faces food insecurity, according to the United Nations.
