Peyton Miller has a habit of changing games the moment he steps off the bench. Wednesday night in Atlanta was no different.
The 18-year-old Homegrown defender came on as a second-half substitute and delivered the decisive moment of the New England Revolution’s 2-1 comeback win over Atlanta United FC, chipping the ball over goalkeeper Lucas Hoyos in the 78th minute to seal the club’s fourth consecutive victory and, importantly, their first road win of the 2026 MLS season.
Before Miller’s winner, it was Will Sands who hauled New England level.
The defender, making his eighth consecutive start to open the season, met a Carles Gil corner at the back post in the 73rd minute and headed the ball into the net for his first career MLS goal — a milestone moment that ignited a five-minute span that turned the match on its head.
Atlanta had entered halftime with a 1-0 advantage, courtesy of veteran striker Fafà Picault, who converted on the rebound after Matt Turner produced a diving stop to deny Saba Lobjanidze’s close-range effort in the 38th minute. The Revolution had appeared to break through in the 18th minute when Alhassan Yusuf lashed a volley into the net, but the goal was waved off after a VAR review for offside.
Head Coach Marko Mitrović used his substitutions to shift the game.
He introduced fellow Homegrown Player Diego Fagundez alongside Miller in the second half, and the pair helped unlock a struggling Atlanta side. It was Fagundez who initiated Miller’s winner — playing a pass into the box for Gil, whose deft touch redirected the ball directly into the 18-year-old’s path. Miller, calm under pressure, lifted a composed chip over Hoyos that found the back of the net.
Miller signed as the 12th Homegrown Player in Revolution history and the first from Connecticut, becoming the youngest player in club history to sign an MLS contract when he put pen to paper at age 15. All three of his goals in 2026 have come from the substitutes’ bench.
Gil, the Spanish playmaker, continues to assert himself as the engine of New England’s attack. His corner kick set up Sands’ equalizer, giving him three assists on the season. According to the club, Gil is now the 14th player in MLS history to record 90 regular-season assists — a milestone underscoring his enduring influence after nearly a decade in Foxborough.
In goal, Turner was outstanding on a night when he was called upon repeatedly. The U.S. international finished with a season-high eight saves, including a critical stop in the final minute to protect the result. His performance anchored a defensive unit that absorbed significant pressure despite operating on the road against a side desperate for points.
Atlanta entered Wednesday’s match with just one win in eight games, sitting near the bottom of the Eastern Conference table. New England, by contrast, has now strung together four straight victories and climbed into fifth place in the East.
The Revolution return to action Saturday, April 25, when they host Inter Miami CF at Gillette Stadium. With momentum building and the club’s attack finding its rhythm, New England will look to keep pace in an increasingly competitive Eastern Conference race.
