Massachusetts: Leading the Nation in Gun Safety with the Lowest Firearm Death Rate

Massachusetts has been officially named the safest state in the U.S., thanks to its low rate of gun-related deaths and strict gun laws.

This distinction was awarded by the GIFFORDS Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, which gave the state an “A” grade for its rigorous gun safety measures.

This recognition underscores the Commonwealth’s commitment to public safety and its leadership role in preventing gun violence.

A commitment to public safety

Governor Maura Healey, known for her dedication to protecting citizens and supporting immigrant communities, said she was proud of the state’s achievements. “Massachusetts is the best state in which to live, work and raise a family, in large part because we prioritize public safety,” she said. Stressing the importance of the state’s collective efforts, she insisted that “no parent should have to worry about whether their child will be safe at school or on the playground.”

Massachusetts, home to the third-largest Haitian community in the U.S., has long been a sanctuary state that welcomes immigrants and protects their rights.

Governor Healey has always supported the Haitian community, advocating for its safety, integration and success. Her leadership reinforces Massachusetts’ commitment to creating a safe and inclusive environment for all residents.

Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll echoed the Governor’s sentiments, emphasizing the role of collaboration. Drawing on her experience as a former mayor, she said, “This ranking recognizes the work of our local, state and federal leaders who make public safety a priority.” Mrs. Driscoll reaffirmed the state’s commitment to building on its successes to ensure a safe future for all its communities.

Exemplary legislation

Massachusetts earned this top spot thanks to measures such as the Firearms Laws Modernization Act (H.4885), signed into law earlier this year. This landmark legislation includes:

  • A ban on ghost guns, including those made using 3D printers.
  • The strengthening of Extreme Risk Protection Orders to prevent access to firearms by people deemed dangerous to themselves or others.
  • Increased investment in violence prevention programs.

Emma Brown, executive director of GIFFORDS Law Center, commended Massachusetts for its leadership, saying, “Massachusetts‘ A grade on GIFFORDS’ annual scorecard is proof of the effectiveness of common-sense gun laws in saving lives.” She noted that the state serves as a model for Americans seeking freedom from the fear of gun violence.

House Speaker Ronald J. Mariano and Senate President Karen E. Spilka also emphasized the importance of this recognition. Mr. Mariano praised the bipartisan collaboration that has led to Massachusetts’ achievements, while Mrs. Spilka emphasized the balance between the rights of law-abiding gun owners and the need for strong public safety measures.

“Our work has helped Massachusetts maintain the lowest gun death rate in America,” said Mariano. “In Massachusetts, we will not waver in protecting our communities from gun violence,” Spilka added.

A model for the rest of the country

GIFFORDS’ annual Gun Laws Scorecard evaluates states across the country, establishing a clear link between strict legislation and reduced gun violence.

Massachusetts’ success serves as a roadmap for other states, demonstrating how proactive legislation and collaboration can save lives.

As Massachusetts celebrates its ranking, Governor Healey and her administration reaffirm their commitment to protecting communities in the state, which represents the third-favorite destination for Haitian immigrants after Florida and New York.

With the upcoming change in federal administration, Massachusetts could welcome even more immigrants seeking protection, particularly in the face of Donald Trump’s proposed mass deportation policy.
