Three of the most recognizable names in global music will share the stage at MetLife Stadium on July 19, 2026, when FIFA stages the first-ever halftime show at a World Cup Final — a performance that organizers say will double as a fundraising platform for children’s education worldwide.

Madonna, Shakira, and the Korean pop group BTS will co-headline the show, FIFA and the advocacy organization Global Citizen announced this week.
Coldplay frontman Chris Martin will curate the performance, which will be broadcast live to a global audience expected to rival or exceed the more than one billion viewers the World Cup Final routinely draws.

For Caribbean Television Network viewers across the Haitian and broader Caribbean diaspora, the announcement adds a layer of cultural anticipation to a tournament that already carries historic significance. Haiti is returning to the World Cup for the first time in 52 years, and the United States — alongside Canada and Mexico — is hosting the expanded 48-nation tournament for the first time in U.S. soccer history.

The World Cup, which traces its origins to 1930 in Uruguay, has never previously included a halftime entertainment segment at its championship match.

The decision to introduce one in 2026 represents a notable break with tradition for FIFA, which has historically kept the Final’s pace closer to that of a club football match than to an American-style sporting spectacle.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino framed the announcement as both a cultural and humanitarian milestone.

“Madonna, Shakira and BTS are global icons whose music transcends borders and generations, and we are proud to welcome them to the first-ever FIFA World Cup Final Halftime Show curated by Chris Martin of Coldplay,” Infantino said in the joint statement released by FIFA and Global Citizen.

He added that the performance is intended to serve a purpose beyond entertainment.

“As the world comes together for the biggest match in football on 19 July 2026 in New York, New Jersey, this historic show will also shine a light on a greater purpose,” Infantino said. “It will be a celebration of football, unity, and shared humanity that will resonate far beyond the final whistle.”

The Education Fund at the Center of the Show

The halftime show will serve as a centerpiece event for the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, a philanthropic initiative aiming to raise $100 million for children’s education and football access programs worldwide. According to FIFA, more than $30 million has already been committed to the fund. Each ticket sold to the 2026 tournament will contribute $1 to the fund — a structural fundraising mechanism that, given the scale of the expanded 104-match tournament, could meaningfully accelerate progress toward the $100 million target.

FIFA announced earlier in the week that the fund has already issued its first round of grants to organizations operating in 10 countries, supporting programs that combine education with access to football in underserved communities.

Shakira, who serves on the fund’s advisory board, said the cause is personal.

“I’ve spent my life doing two things — making songs and building schools,” the Colombian singer said in the FIFA statement. “At the FIFA World Cup, those two paths come together.”

Shakira confirmed she will perform “Dai Dai,” a track she wrote specifically for the 2026 tournament and the education fund it supports.

“My hope is that on the world’s biggest stage, the importance of investing in children’s education steals the show,” she said.

Madonna and BTS Join the Cause

Madonna, who has not previously performed at a FIFA World Cup, addressed her involvement in the same announcement.

“Performing at the World Cup final in support of the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund is deeply meaningful to me,” she said. “Without education, children are denied opportunity before they even have a chance. Every child deserves access to quality learning — because education expands possibilities and creates lasting change.”

BTS, the South Korean group whose international fanbase has driven multiple billion-stream records over the past decade, framed the performance as a vehicle for connection rather than spectacle.

“Music is the universal language of hope and harmony,” the group said in the statement, “and we’re honored to celebrate that power at the World Cup by connecting with millions of viewers around the world in support of children’s education.”

In a less expected programming choice, FIFA confirmed that characters from Sesame Street and The Muppets will appear during the halftime show. The pairing — global pop stars alongside puppets that have shaped early childhood education across multiple continents for more than half a century — appears designed to underline the show’s stated focus on children and learning.

The decision is consistent with the broader thematic frame organizers are constructing around the performance: a global cultural moment tied to a measurable social outcome, rather than a standalone musical spectacle.

Production and Broader Context

The halftime show is being produced by Global Citizen in partnership with Live Nation and the production company Done + Dusted. In a short promotional film unveiling the lineup, Chris Martin described the show as being “all about togetherness,” adding, “everyone’s invited.”

Hugh Evans, the co-founder and chief executive of Global Citizen, framed the production as an attempt to translate a singular cultural moment into long-term humanitarian impact.

“By bringing together the world’s greatest artists, football, and a shared commitment to education, we have an opportunity to turn a defining cultural moment into enormous impact through the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund,” Evans said. “My hope is that in a decade from now, we will see millions of lives impacted because of this historic moment.”

The fund’s non-fiduciary advisory board includes Infantino, Evans, Shakira, Australian actor Hugh Jackman, businesswoman Ivanka Trump, Canadian singer-songwriter The Weeknd, tennis champion Serena Williams, Brazilian football legend Kaká, and Bank of America co-president Jim DeMare.

For Haitian and Caribbean audiences, the announcement reinforces the tournament as already shaping up to be the most consequential cultural event of 2026.
Haiti’s return to the World Cup after a 52-year absence has galvanized the diaspora across Boston, New York, Miami, Montreal, and throughout the Caribbean. The presence of Shakira — whose Colombian and Lebanese heritage makes her one of the most recognized Latin American performers in history — adds an additional layer of representation for Latin and Caribbean audiences, who will dominate viewership in this hemisphere.

CTN will provide multilingual coverage of the tournament throughout June and July 2026, including coverage of the Final and its halftime show in English, French, and Haitian Creole.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup Final is scheduled for Sunday, July 19, 2026, at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
