A Haitian student at UNIFESSPA in Brazil, John Peter Saint-Fleur, drowned on June 16, 2022, during a student outing. He died in Serra das Andorinhas and his body is still waiting to be repatriated.
Leaving Haiti to complete his studies in Brazil, John Peter Saint-Fleur was doing a master’s degree in mathematics at the Federal University of South and Southeast Pará, in Marabá.
While the circumstances of the tragic death of the young Haitian are still to be elucidated, the University published a note of sympathy.
“The Federal University of South and Southeast Pará (Unifessspa) expresses its deep sadness at the death of John Peter Saint-Fleur, an exchange student in the Graduate Program in Science and Mathematics Education (PPGECM), which occurred on Thursday, June 16, 2022, in Serra das Andorinhas. John had joined Unifesspa in 2021 and came from Haiti to complete his training at the Master level. The entire Unifesspa community feels his loss and sympathizes with his families in Haiti, friends and classmates. Unifesspa is already in contact with the family members for the necessary follow-up,” the note reads.
