Bilateral Council of Ministers: The Beginning of a New Era in Haitian-Colombian Cooperation

A significant bilateral Council of Ministers meeting was held in Jacmel on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, bringing together Leslie Voltaire, President of the Conseil Présidentiel de Transition, Presidential Advisor Edgard Leblanc Fils, Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, and members of the Haitian government. Gustavo Petro, President of the Republic of Colombia, also attended, accompanied by his government team.

The purpose of the meeting was to strengthen bilateral ties between the two nations, focusing on critical areas such as economic development, security, energy transition, and environmental challenges. This high-level dialogue, marked by mutual respect and collaboration, represents a significant step in deepening the partnership between Haiti and Colombia.

At the core of the discussions was the shared commitment of both nations to establish mutually beneficial cooperation, addressing contemporary challenges while advancing sustainable development. Both countries emphasized their dedication to promoting regional stability through coordinated initiatives in security, economic development, and environmental sustainability. Energy transition, in particular, was identified as a key area for enhanced collaboration within the global fight against climate change.

The meeting also underscored a strong commitment to regional solidarity. Haiti and Colombia reaffirmed their determination to work toward the integration of Caribbean and Latin American peoples, highlighting the benefits of multisectoral cooperation in tackling global challenges.

Prime Minister Fils-Aimé, speaking on behalf of the Haitian government, reiterated Haiti’s commitment to active diplomacy grounded in the principles of sovereignty, cooperation, and mutual interest. Strengthened collaboration with Colombia aligns with Haiti’s broader goal of establishing itself as a strategic player on the international stage.

This summit marks a pivotal moment in diplomatic relations between Haiti and Colombia, with a focus on building a lasting partnership.
