The Biden administration extends TPS for El Salvador, Venezuela, Sudan, and Ukraine
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced an 18-month extension of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for nationals of El Salvador, Venezuela, Sudan, and Ukraine.
The announcement was made on Friday, according to NepYork, the first media outlet to report the news. The decision will allow eligible nationals to remain legally in the United States while their home countries continue to face dangerous conditions.
El Salvador
TPS for El Salvador has been extended from March 10, 2025, to September 9, 2026, due to ongoing environmental challenges, including severe storms and heavy rains, which have compounded the effects of the 2001 earthquakes. Approximately 232,000 Salvadorans can re-register for TPS and renew their Employment Authorization Documents (EADs).
“After reviewing the situation in El Salvador and consulting with interagency partners, DHS has determined that an 18-month extension of TPS is warranted due to ongoing environmental disasters that have caused substantial but temporary disruptions in living conditions,” NepYork reported.
Venezuela
The new TPS extension for Venezuela will be effective from April 3, 2025, to October 2, 2026. This decision is based on the humanitarian crisis caused by political and economic instability under the Maduro regime.
High crime rates, a lack of essential services, and widespread violence make a safe return impossible for many people. Around 600,000 Venezuelans are eligible to re-register.
“After reviewing conditions in Venezuela and consulting with interagency partners, it was determined that an 18-month extension was necessary due to the humanitarian emergency caused by the political and economic crises under Maduro’s inhumane regime,” NepYork revealed.
Sudan
TPS for Sudan has been extended until October 19, 2026, due to armed conflict and political instability, which continue to generate serious human rights violations. Around 1,900 Sudanese nationals can re-register to retain their status.
“After assessing the situation in Sudan and consulting with interagency partners, it was concluded that an 18-month extension was justified due to ongoing political instability and human rights violations, including direct attacks on civilians,” NepYork explained.
Ukraine
Ukraine’s TPS has also been extended, covering the period from April 19, 2025, to October 19, 2026. This extension is a direct response to the ongoing war and humanitarian crisis caused by Russia’s military invasion. Around 103,700 Ukrainians can re-register and renew their EADs.
“This decision is part of efforts to protect Ukrainian nationals in the face of the instability caused by the Russian military invasion,” NepYork stated.
The official notice will soon be published in the Federal Register and will detail the eligibility criteria and re-registration procedures for each group, NepYork added.
What About Haitians?
On the Haitian side, immigrant rights activists and local and federal elected officials continue to call for a redesignation or extension of TPS for Haiti. Thousands of Haitians are still hoping for an act of generosity from the Biden administration.
This new extension will offer a respite of almost two years to beneficiaries, a period that will extend until the midterm elections, under a possible second Trump administration.
The leader of the MAGA movement, Donald Trump, has already expressed his intention to repeal decisions offering TPS to certain countries. During his first term, he attempted a similar measure, which led to lawsuits that are still pending.
