Another Republican lawmaker is speaking out against the Trump administration’s immigration policy.

California Representative David Valadao openly criticized the immigration operations carried out by the Trump administration in California, advocating for a more targeted approach to deportations.

“I remain concerned about ICE’s ongoing operations across California, and I will continue discussions with the administration, urging them to prioritize the deportation of known criminals rather than hardworking individuals who have been living peacefully in the Valley for years,” Valadao said in a message published Tuesday, as reported by the Latin Times.

While reiterating his support for “the First Amendment right to peaceful protest,” the congressman condemned the recent acts of violence in the region, calling them “unacceptable scenes.” He also reaffirmed his support “for law enforcement working to protect the public and restore order,” according to the Latin Times.

Valadao also shared a Fox News article reporting that California Republicans are submitting a resolution condemning the riots. The resolution also calls on local and state authorities to “work with the federal government to end the violence and restore peace,” according to the Latin Times.

Several other lawmakers from districts won by Kamala Harris in the last presidential election have also raised their voices against Donald Trump’s policy of mass deportation.

Criticism that may ultimately make little difference in the Trump administration’s immigration policy.

Elected in California’s 22nd congressional district, Valadao is considered one of the most vulnerable Republicans in the House of Representatives. His moderate stance on immigration could draw criticism from the conservative base, particularly after his support for a bill aimed at addressing the shortage of agricultural labor, the Latin Times noted.
