The President of Senegal, also Chairman of the African Union Macky Sall, in an exclusive interview on France 24 and RFI, Thursday, June 9, 2022, returned to his recent visit to Sochi, Russia, during which he asked Vladimir Putin to “become aware” that Africa was a victim of the conflict in Ukraine, because of the danger of a global food crisis.

Responding to reporters on his trip to Sochi to meet Vladimir Putin as chairman of the AU, Macky Sall explained that he went there “because we are experiencing a shortage of grain and fertilizer on the African continent. And to continue that he sent three messages to the Russian president starting with doing everything to help free grain from Ukraine through the port of Odessa”, to access grain and fertilizer”, and “to end the war, considered as a de-escalation”. “We ask to engage in discussions with Ukraine and other parties,” added Macky Sall.

“If grain is not produced, we will be in a very serious famine situation that could destabilize the African continent,” warned the AU President.

Recall that President Macky Sall was in Russia last Friday, against the backdrop of fear of food crisis to ask Russian President Vladimir Putin to “become aware” that African countries are “victims” of the war in Ukraine. The President of the African Union, however, said he was “reassured” after his meeting with his Russian counterpart.
“We leave here very reassured and very happy with our exchanges,” Macky Sall told reporters at the end of the three-hour meeting in Sochi, southern Russia, adding that he found the Russian president “committed and aware that the crisis and sanctions create serious problems for weak economies, such as the African economies,” said France 24.
