A federal immigration operation sparked panic Friday at a car wash in Studio City, Los Angeles.
According to a report by CBS News Los Angeles, agents from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested four undocumented immigrants in what authorities described as a “targeted immigration enforcement operation.”
Witnesses said unmarked vehicles pulled up suddenly outside the Studio City Hand Car Wash before federal agents jumped out and began chasing workers.
“All of a sudden, these cars pulled up and just started pulling people,” said one customer, who asked to remain anonymous. “Everybody started screaming. My car was sitting there with towels on it.”
The chaotic scene left many customers rattled. One said he initially thought there was an active shooter and hid in a closet with five other people until the agents left.
“Honestly, it was the saddest thing I’ve ever seen,” he said. “To see grown people crying, terrified that they might lose their families like that — it was heartbreaking.”
Allegations of Rough Treatment
Car wash manager Ben Forat said he witnessed aggressive arrests of his employees, carried out without agents presenting a warrant.
“ICE came and took a bunch of employees without even asking for their identification,” Forat said. He recalled seeing one agent “throw an employee on the floor and twist his arm.” According to him, the man kept repeating: “I have my ID in my locker. I have my ID in my locker.” Forat added: “It was disgraceful.”
The manager also noted that several detained workers had customers’ car keys in their possession, temporarily stranding vehicles at the business. In some cases, customers had to wait for an agent to return a key or for someone to bring a spare set.
Authorities Respond, Customers Outraged
In a statement, the Department of Homeland Security confirmed that four people had been taken into custody, including one individual previously convicted of marijuana possession for sale. Officials insisted the operation was targeted and necessary for public safety.
But for longtime customers of the car wash, that explanation rang hollow. Many expressed outrage at what they saw as an unjust crackdown on workers known in the community.
“They work hard. Their children grow up here and live a better life — that’s what the American story is about,” one customer said. “This madness has to stop.”
Broader Tensions Under Trump Administration
The operation reflects the Trump administration’s broader policy of mass deportations, particularly in cities like Los Angeles, where immigrant communities make up a large share of the local workforce.
Workplace raids not only disrupt the lives of those detained but also destabilize businesses and their customers.
For migrant rights advocates, such tactics raise serious legal and human rights concerns. They argue the raids foster a climate of fear that weakens communities and widens the divide between federal authorities and local residents.
