The Trump administration plans to launch a major operation in the city of Boston in the coming days or weeks. According to Politico and Newsmax, Boston could soon face a significant operation. This “immigration blitz” is expected to begin next month.

Federal services plan to deploy numerous Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in the city. Simultaneously, a similar action is being prepared in Chicago. These two cities resist federal immigration rules. Moreover, they maintain their sanctuary city status, offering protections to immigrants. Local elected officials refuse to cooperate with federal authorities. They do not want to assist in arresting or deporting undocumented immigrants. This position applies even to those with criminal records, the Trump administration has lamented.

Financial Resources Strengthened by New Law

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, passed by Congress, changes the situation. Thanks to this budgetary law, ICE receives the necessary means to conduct its operations. Thus, the agency can better control and deport in targeted areas.

Tom Homan, White House border expert, defends this plan. This week, he declared: “These sanctuary cities that don’t cooperate with ICE create a risk. Dangerous people move freely there. We will take action.” He added: “We will use our resources where there are problems, like sanctuary cities.” For him, it’s a necessary response to “illegal aliens who are in our streets every day,” he stated according to Newsmax.

Boston Mayor’s Response

In Boston, the reaction was immediate and firm. Mayor Michelle Wu clearly rejected the Justice Department’s warnings.

At the beginning of the month, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi had sent a direct message to local authorities. She reminded them particularly of the importance of following federal immigration directives.

Michelle Wu dismissed these threats, maintaining her firm stance. “Our city is the safest in the country because we protect everyone,” she declared with conviction, adding: “In Boston, we don’t give in to intimidation. We stand strong against threats, especially when these tactics appear illegal and cross boundaries.”

However, Pam Bondi had intensified her position.

She sent a letter to 32 sanctuary jurisdictions, including Boston. In this correspondence, she emphasized that officials who obstruct federal action against illegal immigration risk prosecution.

“Sanctuary jurisdictions that prioritize illegal aliens over American citizens have two choices: negotiate or face us in court,” she announced on August 14 on X, according to Newsmax.

This stance demonstrates the government’s toughening strategy. From now on, they intend to use all means, including legal ones, to compel resistant cities to cooperate.

In Boston, immigrant support groups are deeply concerned. Indeed, they fear these new actions will create an atmosphere of anxiety in the community, where undocumented families might live in constant fear of interventions.

Decisive Months Ahead

The implementation of this operation in Massachusetts will depend on ICE’s resources and the level of cooperation from local governments. However, White House messages clearly indicate that the decision has already been made. For now, residents wait to see if the administration will implement this “immigration blitz.”
