Two employees of SOGEBANK, a major Haitian banking institution, were apprehended by the Bureau of Financial and Economic Affairs (BAFE/ DCPJ) of the Central Directorate of the Judicial Police, on Thursday, May 4, 2023, for alleged theft, complicity in theft, criminal conspiracy and embezzlement. The two women, Catheline Barochin, director of operations of the bank, and Saint Paul Daphkar, cash supervisor, are suspected of having embezzled an estimated amount of 132,000 U.S. dollars following complaints filed by several customers of the bank.
The arrests were made as part of an ongoing investigation by the DCPJ into the alleged financial misappropriations. Investigators are looking for other possible accomplices who may have left their positions before the investigation was launched.
Catheline Barochin and Saint Paul Daphkar are currently in custody and are awaiting the necessary legal consequences. SOGEBANK, for its part, has not yet commented publicly on this case. It is important to note that theft and embezzlement are serious crimes that can result in prison sentences and significant fines for those involved. Police and judicial authorities say they are committed to upholding the law and protecting the interests of citizens and businesses from all forms of financial crime.
