The Administration of Joe Biden is very concerned about the slow pace of the investigation into the assassination of Jovenel Moise.
One year later, very little progress has been made to “hold accountable” the perpetrators of this crime. These were the words of Assistant U.S. Secretary of State for the Western Hemisphere Brian Nichols during a press conference at the State Department attended by ZoomHaitiNews and CaribbeanTelevision Network. The U.S. official urged the Haitian authorities to take steps to facilitate the investigation.
Brian Nichols made his remarks while reporting on the meeting of “international partners on Haiti” on Friday. A meeting organized by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Suriname in which 17 countries and international organizations took part.
It was an opportunity for participants to reaffirm their commitment to support Haiti and urge Haitian actors to find an agreement for the organization of elections “as soon as possible”, said Mr. Nichols who recalls that more than 254 million dollars have been mobilized for Haiti from December to date. The U.S. official took the opportunity to highlight the efforts of Canada and the European Union, which have pledged additional funding of $5 million and $3.8 million respectively.
The renewal of the UN mandate in Haiti
All the actors who took part in the meeting were in favor of extending the mandate of the integrated office of the United Nations in Haiti, revealed Mr. Nichols welcoming the efforts of the UN to contribute to the improvement of the security situation and the respect of human rights in Haiti.
