At the initiative of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, a high-level meeting of the Canadian government should be held recently on the situation in Haiti.

Discussions are expected to focus on Canada’s support for Haiti, Prime Minister Ariel Henry’s request to the international community to send foreign troops to Haiti, and the shipment of weapons and other equipment to Haiti to fight insecurity, among other things. A first batch of equipment including armor was delivered last week to Haiti.

During this meeting, Canada will evaluate with “thoroughness” the feasibility of the Haitian government’s request for the sending of foreign troops to Haiti, ZOOMHAITINEWS and CARIBBEANTELEVISIONNETWORK have learned from a source close to the Canadian government.

During the last UN Security Council on Haiti on Monday, October 17, 2022, Russia and China had expressed reservations on the request made by Ariel Henry and his band. These two permanent members of the Security Council had urged the UN to consider the protests in Haiti against the presence of foreign military on Haitian soil.

The UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres had, a few weeks ago, advocated for the sending of a special force in Haiti composed of one or more countries. A force that would not operate under the aegis of the United Nations, but approved by the world institution, Guterres said in a letter to members of the Security Council.

At the last meeting on Haiti at the UN Security Council, Haitian Foreign Minister Jean Victory Généus admitted that the situation in his country is catastrophic. “Haitians are not living. They are surviving”, the head of Haitian diplomacy had hammered. A statement that came only 15 days after he had declared on the same platform that “everything [was] generally under control in Haiti”.
