The Vodou sector is in mourning following the passing to “Alada” of Houngan Asongoué Jean Andrénord Lundi, former leader of the “Shango-Shawa” mystical temple in the commune of Cayes-Jacmel. The man, aged 72, passed away on the morning of Thursday September 19, 2024, leaving behind him a deeply saddened community.
Asongoué Jean Andrénord Lundi was an emblematic figure of vodou. In 2013, he had been elevated to the rank of Gouétord II by the “Konsèy Nasyonal Vodou Ayisyen” (KNVA), in recognition of his commitment to the promotion and advancement of vodou, particularly in the Sud-Est department. He worked alongside influential figures such as Manbo Carole Demesmin to promote the tradition and strengthen its integration into Haitian society.
His family and disciples pay tribute to his dedication and exemplary career. A Hounsi from his temple told Caribbean Television Network that a “Desounen” ceremony, a ritual aimed at releasing the deceased’s mystical forces, was performed before his body was deposited in the morgue.
The department’s current Gouétord II, Houngan Malique Joseph, expressed his deep sadness on hearing the news. “It’s a huge loss for all of us,” he said, while extending his condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased. “His departure marks the end of an era in Southeastern Vodou,” he added.
According to a family source, the deceased suffered from diabetes and hypertension, conditions that contributed to his death. Despite these health difficulties, he continued to serve his community to the very end.
Vodou tradition thus loses an authoritative voice, a man whose impact will remain engraved in our memories.
A series of ceremonies in his honor is planned over the coming days.
