Social Appeasement Program: Water is coming back to farmers’ plots in several localities in the Lower Northwest

CTN News

The Social Appeasement Program in the Northwest is an initiative financed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Haitian government. As part of this program, a delegation composed of various personalities and executives from the Departmental Directorate of Agriculture, led by Agronomist Charité Louis, Departmental Director of the Northwest, and his deputy, is engaged in a five-day mission in the Lower Northwest to assess the impacts of the program in the area.

One of the projects undertaken as part of this mission is the treatment of the main water retention basin in the area, which has a capacity of 4755 cubic meters and feeds the communities of Bois-d’Hommes, La Baie, Haute Délice and Passe Sèche. This basin was filled with sediment up to a height of one and a half meters, while its height is about 2.15 meters after the passage of Hurricane Mathieu.
Over a period of twelve days, workers removed more than 2248 cubic meters of sediment from the retention basin. This project will allow water to return to more than 110 hectares of land that had been abandoned since the passage of Hurricane Mathieu, which had blocked the main irrigable area of the zone.

On the other hand, in the commune of Landrimage, first section, the Bombardopolis platform of the construction work of dry stone thresholds is currently underway. This mechanical structure should promote the penetration of runoff water in land abandoned because of the persistent drought that strikes area.

Seeing the water return to these parcels is a source of pride for Mr. Erneau St. Félix, 73 years old, who wishes to see the continuation of this work in the slopes.
For the Director of the Bureau Agricole Communal Regroupement BAC Bombardopolis/Baie de Henne, Mr. Jérôme Karl Ernst, “this project will help the area maximize the agricultural potential of the locality, and will allow farmers to have access to food, thus strengthening the resilience of the community. In this case, it will be called food security. This program is currently reaching approximately 305 direct beneficiaries in the communes of Bombardopolis and Baie de Henne alone.
The commune is composed of the communal sections of Citerne Rémy, Dos d’Âne, Réserve, and Estère déré or Petite Anse. It has a population of 24,812 inhabitants according to the 2009 census.

The population of more than 24,812 is calling for drainage and cleaning of the canals to stem the problem of drought. The inhabitants of the area want a water supply to remedy this problem.
