The leaders of G20 member countries are gathering in Brazil this Thursday.
This event will be largely dominated by the situation in the Middle East, the war in Ukraine, and the situation in Haiti, among others.
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, who will participate in this event, will take the opportunity to discuss the deployment of a security force in Haiti.
“In addition to G20-related commitments, the Secretary of State will participate in a meeting of G20 foreign ministers and invited partners to address the humanitarian crisis in Haiti and rally support for the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS),” according to a statement from the State Department.
The US Secretary of State hopes to leverage this activity to garner support from other countries to contribute to the security mission to be deployed in Haiti soon. “We will also focus on US support for the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) in Haiti and strive to galvanize further international contributions,” the US Department of State said.
Foreign ministers from Russia, representatives from China, and other G20 member countries will participate in this activity.
As a staunch advocate for the Haitian people, the Brazilian president also intends to use this summit to draw international attention to the need to facilitate a solution to the Haitian crisis. He will also emphasize the situation in the Middle East, particularly the actions of the Israeli army in Palestine, which have resulted in nearly 30,000 Palestinians killed since Hamas militants’ attacks, causing over 1,200 deaths in Israel.
In a lengthy message posted on his account, formerly known as Twitter, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva denounces the hypocrisy and lack of humanity of wealthy countries that have decided to reduce humanitarian aid to Palestinians in great need. “Recent allegations against agency officials must be properly investigated, but they must not paralyze the organization. Palestinian refugees in Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon will also be abandoned. It is necessary to end this inhumanity and cowardice,” Mr. Lula wrote, who also advocated for a “definitive ceasefire allowing the provision of sustainable and unhindered humanitarian aid, as well as the immediate and unconditional release of hostages.”
