Haitian-American woman named White House Press Secretary

American President Joe Biden appointed Karine Jean-Pierre as White House Press Secretary.

The decision was made on Thursday.

In a statement issued on Thursday the head of the U.S. state praised the new press secretary.

“Karin not only brings the experience, talent and integrity needed for this challenging position, but she will continue to lead the way in communicating the work of the Biden-Harris administration on behalf of the American people,” Biden said. Until her appointment, Ms. Jean Pierre was the White House deputy press secretary.

Karine Jean Pierre replaces Jen Psaki who will leave the White House on May 13.

Calling Ms. Jean Pierre’s appointment historic, Jen Psaki also congratulated her successor.

“Representation is important and it will give a voice to a lot of people, but it will also make a lot of people dream about what is really possible,” said Ms. Psaki.

Karine Jean Pierre was very active in candidate Joe Biden’s campaign. Before joining Biden’s campaign team, the Haitian-American was the public affairs officer for the progressive group MoveOn.org and a former political analyst for NBC and MSNBC. She had also worked with former President Barack Obama.

Born on August 13, 1977 in Martinique to Haitian parents, Karine was raised in Queens, New York. She holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Columbia University in 2003. In 2014, she was appointed as a lecturer in international and public affairs at this university.
