Haiti: Transforming the Multinational Force into a UN Peacekeeping Mission is Vital for the Country’s Future

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Religious Affairs of the Republic of Haiti, Jean-Victor Harvel Jean-Baptiste, participated in a crucial meeting of the United Nations Security Council in New York on Wednesday, January 22, 2025. The meeting provided an opportunity to assess the increasingly complex socio-political and security situation in Haiti.

During the meeting, which was well attended by Council members, the severity of the current crisis in Haiti was underscored, highlighting the need for greater international support to address the country’s security and political challenges. The Haitian Chancellor specifically emphasized the progress made by the Haitian National Police (PNH), thanks to the support of the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS), while noting the fragility of these advances, which require stronger backing to ensure their sustainability.

Minister Jean-Victor Harvel Jean-Baptiste strongly advocated for the transformation of the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) into a United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in Haiti. He argued that the involvement of a UN mission would be crucial to stabilizing the country by ensuring a continuous international presence capable of supporting local efforts to restore order and security.

“Every day of inaction compounds the suffering of bereaved families, women living in fear, and young people whose dreams are shattered by armed violence,” the Chancellor told the Security Council. He stressed the urgent need for a coordinated response from the international community, declaring that “time is a luxury our nation can no longer afford.”

The meeting also brought together several international partners, who expressed their support for Haiti and their willingness to contribute to a lasting solution to the crisis. Some of them unanimously endorsed the idea of a reinforced commitment to help Haiti overcome its current challenges.

Jean-Victor Harvel Jean-Baptiste’s intervention at the United Nations Security Council marked a turning point in the Republic of Haiti’s diplomatic efforts to secure decisive international support for the crisis. While the situation remains complex and the security challenges significant, the message is clear: Haiti needs reinforced support, stronger international solidarity, and, most importantly, urgent action to save lives and enable the country to rebuild on solid, lasting foundations.

The next steps will be critical, and international commitment will be decisive in helping Haiti recover and ensuring a more stable and prosperous future for its citizens.
