The Transitional Presidential Council (CPT) held a strategic meeting on Friday, March 21, 2025, with the leaders of the National Civil Aviation Office (OFNAC) and the National Airport Authority (AAN) to thoroughly review the progress made toward the much-anticipated reopening of Toussaint Louverture International Airport in Port-au-Prince. This meeting is part of the government’s sustained and methodical efforts to revitalize Haiti’s aviation sector, considered a fundamental pillar of the national economy, despite the numerous obstacles and complex challenges the country is currently facing.

The meeting, presided over by CPT President Fritz Jean, highlighted the main difficulties hindering the reopening process. Discussions particularly focused on major concerns related to airport security and skyrocketing insurance costs. Security remains a critical issue, not only to ensure the protection of travelers but also to restore the confidence of international airlines, which remain hesitant to resume operations in Haiti.

The substantial rise in insurance costs, directly linked to the country’s ongoing political and security instability, poses a significant obstacle, greatly complicating operational conditions for airlines. In response to this situation, intensive negotiations are currently underway with key industry insurers to identify and implement innovative solutions that could ease these financial burdens while maintaining high safety standards for passengers.

However, a glimmer of hope emerged during the meeting. Airlines Spirit and JetBlue have officially expressed their intention to resume service to Cap-Haïtien, a destination that is gradually establishing itself as a strategic air transport hub in Haiti. This announcement represents a positive and encouraging sign for the gradual revival of the national aviation sector.

Fritz Jean did not hide his satisfaction with the constructive synergy that has developed between the CPT, OFNAC, and AAN. He particularly emphasized the crucial importance of coordinated and harmonious action to overcome current obstacles and inject new momentum into the country’s airport infrastructure. According to him, close and sustained collaboration among all stakeholders is the key to restoring the confidence of airlines and travelers.

Authorities continue their relentless efforts to finalize the reopening of Toussaint Louverture Airport, considering this step essential for the resumption of international commercial flights to Haiti. This initiative represents a critical milestone in the country’s overall economic recovery process. Efforts are primarily focused on strengthening security measures—an indispensable condition for enabling a normal and sustainable resumption of aviation activities as soon as possible.
