Lazarre Maxihen, journalist of the online media Roi des infos, was shot dead, Sony Laurore, of Laurore News TV, and Yves Moise of RCH 200, were wounded by bullets.
The toll was established by Robeste Dimanche, president of an association of online media.
The violence occurred during a day of demonstrations by several thousand workers in the capital, to contest the government’s decision to grant them 685 gourdes as minimum wage.
The protesters continue to demand the 1500 gourdes requested during the first four days of their movement initiated at the premises of the National Society of Industrial Parks.
Prime Minister Ariel Henry and his team have decided on the issue by setting at 685 the salary that the subcontracted workers will receive for eight hours a day.
During the February 23 demonstration in the capital, police officers again used excessive tear gas to disperse the crowd, which was much larger in number than on the previous four days of protests.
“The behavior of the police is unacceptable, we demand respect for our rights,” chanted protesters who had no intention of backing down despite the police violence.
