Haiti is actively participating in the G77 + China conference on tourism issues, currently held in Cuba. The Minister of Tourism, Luz Kurta Cassandra François, represents the country at this event.
She took the opportunity to discuss the challenges related to the revival of the tourism sector, highlighting its positive impact on the economy and the development of communities.
During a bilateral meeting with her Cuban counterpart, Juan Carlos Garcia Granda, the Minister of Tourism highlighted the importance of cooperation between Haiti and Cuba in the field of tourism to create a regional multidestination offer. This tourism connectivity will promote the development of the tourist pole of the North, she stressed.
Measures are also discussed to ease the conditions for obtaining visas for tourist stays between the two countries. According to government communication officials, this initiative reflects the willingness of Haiti and Cuba to work together to develop the tourism sector in the region.
In 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic, the Labadee site hosted an average of about 800,000 tourists per year, including more than 700,000 cruise passengers, according to the Association of Industries of Haiti (ADIH). However, this figure dropped significantly after the outbreak of the pandemic.
Despite the difficult context, the resort of Labadee welcomed 400,000 tourists and saw the arrival of 133 cruise ships in 2022, according to an unnamed source from the Société Labadie Nord quoted by the Ayibopost newspaper. This came despite warnings from countries such as the United States and Britain against visiting Haiti.
