The armed clashes between the 400 Mawozo and Chen Mechan gangs from April 24 to May 2, 2022, in the Cul-de-sac plain, caused the death of more than 39 people, the disappearance of 8 others, the burning of 23 houses and the displacement of several thousand inhabitants, according to the second assessment of the Civil Protection released Wednesday.
This assessment is still provisional. Information communicated by some local residents and witnesses of the events suggest that many more people were killed.
Families who fled several neighborhoods of the Cul-de-Sac Plain are still hesitating to return to their homes despite a respite in the hostilities and an apparent calm observed since Wednesday evening.
This Thursday, May 5th 2022, some economic activities have resumed. But the 48 schools, the 5 medical centers and the 8 public markets that had to close their doors because of the clashes have not yet reopened.
This lull comes in the wake of the extradition of Gang 400 Mawozo leader Germine Joly, aka Yonyon, to the United States. Life is gradually returning to the area. Traffic and the presence of small businesses were noticed in less than 24 hours. However, some people remained on the alert while waiting to set foot in the area again, fearing reprisals or new clashes between rival gangs.
