Gabriel Boric, the new strongman in Chile

CTN News

From the student movement to the supreme magistracy of the State, the astonishing course of the leftist.
In the second round of the presidential election of December 19, the leftist Gabriel Boric reached the supreme magistracy of the Chilean state against his rival of the extreme right Jose Antonio Kast.
The leftist leader studied law in an unfinished course. He was involved in the students’ struggle to achieve free and accessible education for all. That’s why he became president of the Chilean Federation of Students.

Born on February 11, 1986, the child of Punta Arénas, in the south of Patagonia, is determined to offer the majority of Chilean citizens the best possible living environment. In 2014, he was elected to the 38th and 28th congressional districts under the Social Convergence Party.

The presidential winner supported the 2019 jolts triggered by the socio-economic situation. He also advocated for the constitutional reform that sounded the death knell of the Pinochet regime.

In 2021, he ran for president against the far-right candidate Jose Antonio Kast, winning 55% of the votes against 44% for his rival in 99.96% of the polls.

The return of the left to power rhymes with the reinforcement of socio-economic programs aimed at granting all the necessary welfare to the Chilean people. Gabriel Boric, the youngest president in the history of Chile, will have to face great challenges, including the boosting of workers’ rights by increasing the minimum wage, the generalization of the pension system and the implementation of a universal health insurance program.

The newly elected president will also have to tackle the thorny issue of reforming the Chilean police force and gradually increasing the tax burden on companies and the wealthy in the Chilean economy. The reform of the most unequal country of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), is a challenge for Gabriel Boric who will take the reins of Chile next March.
