Former Japonese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was assassinated on Friday.
Mr. Abe was hit by two bullets while campaigning for his party. The 67-year-old former Japanese head of state was rushed to hospital and died from his injuries.
Shinzo Abe was delivering a campaign speech for the upcoming senatorial elections scheduled for Sunday when he was attacked by a 41-year-old man using a homemade weapon, according to the national broadcaster NHK and the Kyodo news agency.
Shinzo Abe is the Japanese politician who has spent the longest time in power as prime minister.
In 2006 he was elected president of the Japanese Liberal Party, making him the youngest head of government at 52. He spent 8 years and 8 months in power.
Mr. Abe was much admired by Western leaders. He is known for his diplomatic skills. He retired from politics in 2020 citing health reasons. But he remained very active on the Japanese political scene. He regularly gave consultations to the current Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.
