Earthquake in Brazil: Minor damage

CTN News

An earthquake measuring 4.0 on the Richter scale struck São Paulo early this Friday, January 16, 2023. The epicenter was located between the cities of Maracatu, Iguape and Itariri, reports the local seismology center.
No major damage was reported. According to the USPG, a magnitude 4 earthquake can be felt up to 100km away, but is not strong enough to cause concern. Minor damage may occur in the epicentral zone, as well as cracks in houses.

The fire department and civil protection authorities have received no calls for casualties and no reports of structural damage.
However, some São Paulo residents expressed concern, recalling that Brazil has experienced major earthquakes in the past, notably in 1955 at Serra do Tombador in Mato Grosso, and again in June 2022, which caused considerable damage and loss of life.
