As the United States mourns the passing of former President Jimmy Carter, governors from across the political spectrum are paying tribute to his extraordinary life and legacy.
Mr. Carter, who died at the age of 100, was celebrated for his lifelong commitment to peace, democracy and humanitarian action.
In Massachusetts, Governor Maura Healey ordered that U.S. and Commonwealth flags be flown at half-mast in all state buildings until January 28, 2025, as a mark of respect for the late president.
“President Carter lived a life dedicated to peace, human rights, democracy and moral clarity. He set an enduring example of what it means to serve others, and his legacy will continue to inspire generations to come,“ said Governor Healey. ”I send love and strength to the Carter family and our nation to help them overcome this profound loss. May we all honor his memory by building a more just, peaceful and united world,” according to a statement released by the Governor’s communications office.
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine also paid tribute to Carter, recalling his faith-filled life and important contributions.
“Fran and I are saddened to learn of the passing of former President Jimmy Carter,“ Governor DeWine said. “President Carter lived his faith throughout his public life and served in one of the most influential post-presidencies in U.S. history. He dedicated his life to humanitarian action, including building homes through Habitat for Humanity, of which he became a symbol.”
Governor DeWine highlighted Mr. Carter’s military service, recalling that he was part of the “Greatest Generation” and received the World War II Victory Medal. He also spoke of the enduring partnership between Carter and his wife, Rosalynn Carter, who passed away earlier this year.
“President Carter is the longest-lived former president, and he and the late First Lady Rosalynn were the longest-married presidential couple in history, as they celebrated their 77th wedding anniversary,“ DeWine added. “Fran and I extend our deepest condolences to President Carter’s children, Jack, James, Donnel and Amy, as well as his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren,” added Mike Dewine to traver his communications office.
Jimmy Carter’s legacy unites leaders of all political affiliations in admiration for his unwavering commitment to public service. His presidency, marked by such important achievements as the Camp David Accords and the Panama Canal Treaty, was only the beginning of a life dedicated to advancing human rights, promoting peace and fighting poverty and disease.
Carter’s work with The Carter Center, founded in 1982, transformed global health and democracy promotion, earning him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.
His hands-on efforts with Habitat for Humanity have made him a symbol of humility and service.
The lowering of flags across Massachusetts and heartfelt tributes from leaders such as Governors Healey and DeWine underscore Americans’ deep respect and gratitude for the 39th President.
