Boston Legacy FC kicked off its first professional season on Saturday, March 14, at Gillette Stadium in front of a record crowd, showing just how much the city supports women’s soccer. Boston Mayor Michelle Wu and other local officials were there as the new team played its first NWSL game against Gotham FC.
For its first-ever professional game, Boston Legacy faced a tough adversary in the defending champions from New York.
Despite a narrow 1-0 defeat, the newcomers delivered a convincing performance that offered hope for the franchise’s future and provided tangible evidence that Boston can support professional women’s soccer at the highest level.
The fans played a big part in the day. With 30,207 people filling Gillette Stadium, Boston set a league record for an expansion team’s first home game, according to the organizers. This strong turnout showed just how much support there is for women’s soccer in the area and made Boston Legacy FC a major presence in the league from the start.
The excitement in the stadium matched the buildup since the team was announced. Fans packed the stands in team colors, cheering loudly for every play. Mayor Wu and other city leaders were there too, showing the strong support the club has from the community as it finds its place among Boston’s many sports teams.
An Aggressive Start
Boston started the game with energy, matching Gotham’s pace and creating several chances to score in the first half. The Legacy looked confident and didn’t seem nervous, taking the game to their experienced opponents right from the start.
Defender Jorelyn Carabalí made the Gotham goalkeeper work in the 31st minute with a strong shot. This showed Boston was willing to attack and take risks to score. Soon after, the Legacy won back-to-back corner kicks in the 33rd and 34th minutes, keeping Gotham under pressure in their own end.
Forward Aïssata Traoré had another shot on goal in the 34th minute as Boston controlled parts of the game and set the pace. This attacking play was a good sign for a team playing its first professional match together.
There were some tough moments in the match. Alba Caño got a yellow card in the 28th minute, and Bianca St-Georges got one in the 39th, showing that Boston’s aggressive play sometimes went too far. As the game went on, the team ended up with four yellow cards and one red card.
Goalkeeper Casey Murphy kept the score at 0-0 in the first half with an important save in the 24th minute, showing the steady play the Legacy will need from her. Thanks to Murphy’s good positioning and choices, both teams went into halftime tied with everything still up for grabs.
Second Half Battle
The second half stayed competitive, with Boston keeping up their energy and effort. Traoré and Fauzia Najjemba worked together for a chance in the 51st minute that just missed, showing again that the team could challenge Gotham’s defense.
Gotham scored four minutes later when González found the net in the 55th minute, putting the Bats up 1-0. The goal came somewhat against the flow of play and showed the sharp finishing that often sets established teams apart from new ones.
Boston refused to fold after conceding. St-Georges and Nichelle Prince mounted back-to-back attacks in the 57th and 58th minutes, testing Gotham’s backline and searching for an immediate response. The quick succession of chances demonstrated the team’s fortitude and refusal to accept defeat passively.
Murphy kept Boston’s hopes alive with another save in the 76th minute, stopping a shot from Rose Lavelle and Jordynn Dudley. This save kept the Legacy close as the game neared the end, but they still needed a goal to earn a draw.
In the last 10 minutes, Najjemba tried several shots from outside the box, keeping Gotham’s defense stay alert. Despite this late push and hard work, the Legacy couldn’t score. Gotham’s defense stayed strong, and the visitors won 1-0.
Competitive Metrics
The stats showed how close the game was between the new team and the experienced one. Boston had 9 shots to Gotham’s 7, which is impressive for their first match. The Legacy had two shots on goal, Gotham possessed four, and Boston earned three corner kicks to Gotham’s one.
The foul count revealed both Boston’s aggressive approach and the disciplinary challenges they’ll need to address. The Legacy committed 20 fouls to Gotham’s 12, numbers that contributed to the four yellow cards and one red card accumulated by the home side. Gotham received three yellow cards but avoided any red cards.
In the end, Murphy made three saves while Gotham’s keeper made two, showing how competitive the match was and how both teams created chances.
Boston Legacy FC, founded and led by women, is now the NWSL’s 15th team. The club wants to build on Boston’s rich sports history and connect with people across the city through soccer. They are focused on supporting top female athletes and building a strong, impactful fan community.
The Legacy’s next game is on Saturday, March 21, when they travel to Houston to play the Dash at Shell Energy Stadium. The match starts at 4:00 PM on Ion Television, giving the team little time to rest as they adjust to the busy pro soccer schedule.
For a first outing, Boston Legacy FC made an impression. The record crowd of 30,207 supporters, a strong showing against the defending champions, and visible energy around the club suggest the team has already begun building the foundation it needs to succeed in one of America’s most demanding sports markets.
The 1-0 defeat stung, but the manner of the performance and the community’s support offered reasons for optimism as the franchise begins its journey in the National Women’s Soccer League.
