The Trump administration plans to intensify immigration operations in five major U.S. cities. Among them are Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Portland, and Seattle.
Border coordinator Tom Homan confirmed the deployment of a “large contingent” of resources to Chicago. He also announced an escalation in other so-called sanctuary jurisdictions. “You can absolutely expect to see intensified operations in Chicago,” he told reporters.
Homan added: “You’re going to see intensification in New York. You’re going to see continued intensification in Los Angeles, and also in Portland and Seattle.” According to Newsweek, his remarks highlight the new federal strategy toward jurisdictions that refuse to cooperate with ICE.
The announcement follows renewed criticism from President Donald Trump of Illinois Governor JB Pritzker. The president accused him of failing to curb crime in Chicago.
On Truth Social, Trump wrote: “Governor Pritzker had six murders in Chicago this weekend. Twenty people were injured. But he doesn’t want to ask for my help.” He continued: “People are desperate for me to stop crime. Democrats are incapable of doing it. Stay tuned!”
For his part, Pritzker denounced a lack of communication. “They don’t seem to want to communicate at all. And that’s strange, because it seems they want to walk over local police,” he said.
Also according to Newsweek, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reached out to the Great Lakes Naval Base, north of Chicago. The goal would be to provide limited logistical support to ICE operations.
The Washington Post, cited by Newsweek, reported that DHS requested facilities, buildings, and technical assistance. No decision, however, has yet been made.
Governor Pritzker said he had received no official communication on the project. “They don’t seem to want to communicate. It’s troubling,” he stated on Wednesday.
The Department of Justice reminded the public that sanctuary cities are those whose laws hinder the enforcement of federal immigration rules.
This month’s published list includes: Albuquerque, Berkeley, Boston, Chicago, Denver, East Lansing, Hoboken, Jersey City, Los Angeles, New Orleans, New York, Newark, Paterson, Philadelphia, Portland, Rochester, Seattle, and San Francisco.
In another Truth Social post, Donald Trump lashed out at the situation in Chicago, targeting both the governor and the mayor, whom he described as incompetent. “He is an incompetent governor who should call me for help. Mayor Johnson is no better. Let’s make Chicago great again!”
Tom Homan emphasized the strategy of targeting sanctuary jurisdictions. “We’re going to take the available resources and move them to problem areas,” he said.
He continued: “In sanctuary cities, they release illegal aliens every day who pose a threat to public safety.”
This announcement intensifies the standoff between Washington and several Democratic governors. JB Pritzker criticized the federal approach. “We support local police. But now it seems the president wants to ignore them completely and act on his own whims,” he said.
For now, no final decision has been made regarding the use of the Great Lakes Naval Base. But local authorities are preparing for a possible escalation of ICE operations.
