ROSEMONT, Ill. — The Big Ten Conference office released its winter 2022 Academic All-Big Ten team Wednesday (March 23), with a record 116 University of Michigan student-athletes earning the distinction. Michigan previously had 113 winter student-athletes earn the honor last year.
Criteria for making the Academic All-Big Ten team include being in at least their second academic year at their institution and maintaining a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.
The breakdown of Michigan student-athletes on the list is five from men’s basketball, 10 from women’s basketball, 17 from men’s gymnastics, 10 from women’s gymnastics, 16 from ice hockey, 21 from men’s swimming and diving, 21 from women’s swimming and diving and 16 from wrestling.
The conference office also awards Academic All-Big Ten distinction in the fall and spring seasons. U-M had 171 honorees in the fall which gives the Wolverines 287 so far for 2021-22.
Student-athletes with a GPA of 3.7 or higher for the current academic year, excluding summer school, are eligible for the Distinguished Scholar Award announced in the summer.
