The UN Security Council unanimously adopted earlier this weekend the resolution proposed by the United States and Mexico on sanctions to be imposed on gangs in Haiti and those who finance them. A decision that continues to generate various reactions. U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan hailed it as “an important step to help the Haitian people at this critical time.
This vote, he continued, “reflects the international community’s commitment to addressing the challenges that contribute to the dire humanitarian situation in Haiti. These measures will target not only those who commit or instigate acts of violence in Haiti, but also those who finance them,” he wrote in a note, a copy of which was sent to Zoomhaitinews.
According to National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, the United States remains committed to supporting the Haitian people.
”We recently delivered security equipment purchased by the Haitian government, including tactical and armored vehicles and supplies, which will assist the Haitian National Police in their fight against criminal actors. USAID staff are currently on the ground alongside Haitian health workers and NGOs to respond to the cholera outbreak and provide care to those in need.
“We will also continue to engage the international community in any additional actions we can take at the United Nations,” he said without elaborating.
Note that according to Alterpresse, citing the U.S. newspaper Washington Post, the final text that was voted unanimously in the UN Security Council eliminated a reference to a call, dated October 7, 2022, from the de facto Council of Ministers of Haiti, for the urgent dispatch of an international military force, which should combat violence in Haiti and alleviate its humanitarian crisis.
The vote on the resolution on the dispatch of an international force is still at an impasse due to the position of Russia and China, who have expressed reservations on this issue, reported RFI.
Meanwhile, the Canadian government has just announced sanctions against the gangs in Haiti and their financiers. For now, the Canadian government is finalizing a list containing the names of some notorious gangsters in Haiti and those who finance them.
Canada also intends to support the efforts of the United Nations to send a peace mission to Haiti, said the Canadian Minister of Economic Development, Harjit Sajjan, in an exclusive interview with ZOOMHAITINEWS and CARIBBEANTELEVISIONNETWORK.
