As a U.S. delegation led by Under Secretary of State Brian A. Nichols travels to Haiti to meet with local stakeholders on the crisis, the U.S. administration is announcing a series of measures to address the humanitarian and security situation in the country.
In a statement by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, the U.S. says it will set the tone and sanction in its own way those who supply arms and ammunition to the gangs that are wreaking havoc in the country.
Antony Blinken is unequivocal, stating: ”We are also announcing a new visa restriction policy under Section 212 (a) (3) (C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act against Haitian officials and others involved in the operation of Haitian street gangs and other criminal organizations that have threatened the livelihoods of the Haitian people and are blocking vital humanitarian assistance”.
According to the U.S. Chancellor’s memo, “such actions may also apply to immediate family members of these individuals.
How do we identify these people?
According to Antony Blinken, “At this time, the U.S. government is identifying an initial group of individuals and their immediate family members who may be subject to visa restrictions under this policy.
This is to demonstrate that there are consequences for those who incite violence and unrest in the country, while he says, “we continue to support citizens, organizations and officials in Haiti who are committed to generating hope and opportunity for a better future in their country.
