Three Police Officers Killed and Armored Vehicle Set on Fire in Liancourt: Tragedy Repeats Itself for Haiti’s National Police (PNH)

The Haitian National Police (PNH) is once again in mourning following a deadly ambush carried out by gunmen from the notorious “Gran Grif” gang of Savien against a police patrol on the afternoon of Tuesday, July 22, 2025. The attack resulted in the deaths of three police officers. At least two civilians were also reportedly killed by the assailants.

The victims, members of the Departmental Unit for the Maintenance of Order (UDMO), were traveling in a PNH armored vehicle that was caught in a trap laid by the gang. The vehicle was also set ablaze.

In a desperate attempt to escape the ambush, the officers engaged in intense firefights with the gang and repeatedly called for backup. Unfortunately, no reinforcements ever arrived, according to fellow officers and local residents.

A source quoted by the online media outlet Vantbefinfo stated that police officers stationed in Liancourt had requested reinforcements several days earlier, warning of renewed attempts by gang members from Savien to regain control of the local police station.

Such attacks on security forces in Haiti have become alarmingly frequent amid a worsening security crisis and escalating gang violence. Armed gangs now hold near-total control over the capital, Port-au-Prince, as well as other regions, including the Artibonite department and, more recently, parts of the Central department.

The tragic events of July 22 are part of a growing list of deadly incidents targeting the Haitian National Police (PNH), the Armed Forces of Haiti (FAD’H), and even the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSSM). A Kenyan police officer assigned to the mission was recently killed by the same “Gran Grif” gang in the Artibonite region.

This incident also echoes the massacre of January 25, 2023, when six national police officers were killed in a similar attack by “Gran Grif” gunmen on the Liancourt police station.

This most recent assault, which left three officers dead, came just one day after a government press release from the Prime Minister’s Office declared that there is “total cohesion at the highest levels of the State” to restore security in Haiti.

The statement followed a high-level meeting attended by Presidential Council members Leslie Voltaire and Laurent Saint-Cyr, Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, Minister of Justice and Public Security Patrick Pélissier, Secretary of State for Public Security Mario Andrésol, members of the Security Task Force, top officials from the Haitian Armed Forces, the Haitian National Police, and the Multinational Security Support Mission.

In the communiqué, the government announced the implementation of exceptional budgetary and logistical measures aimed at immediately strengthening the operational capacity of the Haitian National Police. The stated goal is to intensify and accelerate operations against gangs that continue to sow terror throughout the country and openly challenge the authority of the State.
