The Haitian capital has experienced, this Sunday, July 17, 2022, a new wave of kidnapping with cases more spectacular than others. According to several local media, four people were kidnapped in the town of Delmas, among the victims is the journalist Edner Fils Décimé who works at Alterpresse.
Journalist Edner Fils Décimé has just added to the list of socio-professional victims of kidnapping followed by sequestration. And these acts continue to multiply in the total indifference of the government of Ariel Henry, one of whose members, the Minister of the Interior Listz Quitel, is accused of involvement in the kidnapping of Pastor Jean Michel Feret.
This new wave of kidnappings comes less than 48 hours after the renewal of the mandate of the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH), which is supposed to assist government authorities in developing plans to restore security and peace in the country.
The U.N. Security Council extended the mandate of UNIHRO until July 15, 2022, at a time when rival gangs are waging a merciless battle in Cité Soleil.
According to the UN, at least 234 people were killed or wounded between July 8 and July 15 in the clashes.
Lawyers, journalists, nurses, doctors, schoolchildren, students and merchants are all in the eye of the storm.
