Sending foreign troops to Haiti: CARICOM mission expected in Port-au-Prince on Monday

CTN News

CARICOM representatives will begin a visit to Haiti on Monday, February 27, 2023.

The purpose of the mission will be to discuss with all parties in order to evaluate the Haitian government’s request to send an international peace mission to Haiti.

The announcement was made Thursday by Caricom’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amery Browne, according to the online agency NewsDay.

The Caricom official insisted, however, that it is “premature to talk about sending troops” to Haiti.

“It would really be a matter of getting the government of Haiti as it is now, the Haitian National Police Service, elements of the opposition and other key stakeholders around the table and analyzing what the most prudent next steps would be,” the foreign minister was quoted by NewsDay as saying.

The decision to send a mission to Haiti was made at the 44th regular meeting of Caricom heads of state and government, held last week in the Bahamas,” NewsDay reported.

“A key decision taken by our heads of government in the Bahamas was the decision to launch a special mission to Haiti to have preliminary meetings with a number of key stakeholders,” Dr. Amery Browne said, adding, “This task force will be set up in the Bahamas and will then be transported from the Bahamas to Haiti by the Bahamian Defense Force.”

Representatives from Canada will also participate in this mission with the objective of “addressing the situation in Haiti as quickly as possible.”

Our editorial staff was informed of this visit via a tweet from Canada’s ambassador to Haiti, Sebastien Carièrre, sharing the NewsDay article.
