Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested Wilbert Jean-Baptiste, a 38-year-old man presented as a convicted of murder and an escapee from a Haitian prison, on February 4, according to Shore News Network, citing information from the ICE website.

Jean-Baptiste illegally entered the United States near Brownsville, Texas, on October 31, 2023, where he was apprehended by U.S. Border Patrol. He was later released with a notice to appear before an immigration judge. On May 17, 2024, the judge ordered his deportation to Haiti. However, Jean-Baptiste remained in the U.S. due to ongoing immigration proceedings, according to Shore News Network.

On February 3, the Haitian government informed ICE that Jean-Baptiste was wanted for homicide and had escaped from prison. He was arrested the following day in Massachusetts.

Patricia Hyde, acting director of ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations, stated: “This arrest demonstrates ICE’s unwavering commitment to tracking down fugitives and ensuring they are brought to justice, no matter where they attempt to hide.”

Jean-Baptiste is currently in ICE custody, awaiting imminent deportation to Haiti. U.S. immigration officials have vowed to intensify efforts to apprehend fugitives seeking to evade justice across international borders.

Wilbert Jean-Baptiste is not the first Haitian accused of committing crime in Haiti  apprehended by U.S. immigration authorities. Several other individuals who have exploited weaknesses in the immigration system to seek refuge in the United States have been arrested and are currently in ICE detention.
