De facto Prime Minister Ariel Henry and the Montana group met again on Sunday. The discussions, which lasted more than five hours, focused on the “architecture of the transitional government and the need to find a solution” to the political crisis in the country, which has already gone on for too long.
This second meeting in less than a week took place once again face to face between de facto Prime Minister Ariel Henry and former Minister Magali Comeau Denis, one of the influential members of the so-called Montana Agreement. These exchanges should help prepare the ground for the holding of dialogue between the various actors in order to find a way out of the crisis, according to several sources close to the government.
During the meeting on Sunday, the representative of the Montana Agreement asked the head of the Prime Minister’s Office to suspend his various initiatives, which are considered illegal, to show his good faith in the discussions. These include the processes related to the establishment of the provisional electoral council and the appointment of judges to the Court of Cassation, which the Montana group is calling for an immediate halt.
Magalie Comeau Denis also proposed the establishment of a two-headed executive. Proposals that would not be well received by the de facto Prime Minister Ariel Henri who is expected to make a counterproposal this Monday, ZoomHaitiNews has learned.
Ariel Henri clings to a single-headed executive in order to remain alone at the helm. But the other actors do not hear him this way. The international community would not have approved his approach either, because after 8 months at the head of the government, the 71 year old neurosurgeon has not shown the ability to lead alone, would have fulminated the members of the group.
The two protagonists have given themselves 21 days to find an agreement.
The international community through the U.S. Department of State is increasing the pressure on Ariel Henri to resolve the crisis as quickly as possible. Ariel Henri and the group of Montana should find a consensus before the summit of the Americas next June. A delay which would have been imposed by the State department, learned ZoomHaitiNews of generally well informed sources.
