The U.S. Senate has confirmed Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court.
Only three of the 50 Republican senators voted with the 50 Democrats in favor of Justice Jackson.
Suzanne Colin of Maine, Mitt Romney of Utah and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska decided to break with the rest of the Republican senators on the Brown nomination.
53 senators voted for 47 against.
Mitch McConnell’s gang did everything they could to block Brown’s confirmation. During the hearings, the Republican senators tried to discredit the former judge of the Washington DC Court of Appeals. They accused Ms. Jackson of being too lenient in her judicial decisions. These accusations were rejected by the defenders of the American judge who insisted on the fact that Ketanji B. Jackson had the support of several liberal and conservative professional associations. She is also one of the few judges who has not been the subject of any complaint in the exercise of her profession.
With this confirmation, Ketanji Brown Jackson becomes the first black woman on America’s highest court. She is also the first female criminal defense attorney on the Supreme Court.
Justice Jackson’s confirmation was a historic moment for our nation,” said U.S. President Joe Biden, adding, “We are one step closer to ensuring that our highest court reflects America’s diversity. For Joe Biden, the Harvard University alumna will be an incredible judge, and I was honored to share this moment with her.”
Vice President Kamala Harris, who presided over the session, said she was “elated.” “I feel a deep sense of pride in who we are as a nation, that we just did what we did in terms of the highest court in our land,” she told reporters as she left the Senate floor.
The Democratic majority leader in the upper chamber also expressed his joy.
“This is one of the great moments in American history,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said before the vote. “Today, we take a giant, bold, and important step on the well-trodden path to fulfilling our nation’s founding promise. This is a great moment for Justice Jackson, but it is an even greater moment for America as we move toward a more perfect union,” Chuck Schumer praised.
Former President Barack Obama also welcomed Justice Brown’s confirmation by the Senate. “This is a great day for America, and a proud moment in our history,” wrote the 44th president of the United States in a message on his twitter account.
The new Supreme Court justice will be received at the White House on Friday (April 8, 2022) by President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
Ketanji Brown Jackson will replace Stephen Breyer, 83, who has decided to retire after 28 years on the highest court in America.
Ketanji Jackson Brown’s confirmation will not change the balance of the conservative-dominated Supreme Court, which has six members out of the court’s nine justices. However, it will serve as a catalyst for Democrats hoping to mobilize their supporters in the run-up to the mid-term elections, which Joe Biden’s party is almost certain to lose, according to various polls.
