The administration has officially published in the Federal Register its decision to end the parole program for immigrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela.
The document, which was made public over the past weekend, was published in the Federal Register this Tuesday, March 25, as announced.
“The temporary parole period of aliens in the United States under these programs, and whose parole has not yet expired before April 24, 2025, will end on that date unless the Secretary decides otherwise on an individual basis,” reads the document published in the government’s official journal.
As of this Tuesday, beneficiaries of the CHNV program who do not have other legal status have until April 24 to leave the United States, according to the decision of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
There is a strong possibility that the decision will be challenged in court in the coming hours and/or days. Immigrant rights organizations had already expressed their intention to take legal action against the Trump administration. The beneficiaries of the humanitarian program did not choose to immigrate to the United States illegally. They were invited by the government and are in the country legally, according to Haitian Bridge Alliance, an organization involved in defending immigrant rights.
An atmosphere of panic reigns within Haitian communities in the United States, as they do not know where to turn. More than 320,000 Haitian citizens have benefited from the program since its creation in January 2022. The vast majority of these immigrants had already changed their status after Haiti was redesignated for Temporary Protected Status in early July 2024.
The Trump administration is trying to use all possible means to force immigrants from certain Latin American and Caribbean countries to leave the United States.
Aware of budgetary constraints in implementing Donald Trump’s mass deportation policy, the administration is attempting to use propaganda to scare immigrants, hoping they will deport themselves. Advertising campaigns are being broadcast repeatedly on social media and other media outlets, encouraging undocumented immigrants to leave as soon as possible.
The CBP One application, implemented by the Biden administration to allow immigrants to enter the country legally, has been repurposed as a tool to pressure millions of people to leave Donald Trump’s America.
The administration is also taking an aggressive stance against immigrant rights organizations and law firms, threatening them with sanctions if they continue to support immigrants.
