Presidential Advisor Fritz Alphonse Jean, former Governor of the Banque de la République d’Haïti, met with members of the institution’s Board of Directors on Wednesday, July 10, 2024. During this information and exchange visit, the Conseil présidentiel de transition (CPT) and the Banque de la République d’Haïti (BRH) discussed the country’s financial situation and the major challenges of the transition towards economic and financial recovery.
“As a former governor of BRH, it was with great pleasure that I visited the board to discuss together and take stock of the country’s economic and financial situation in a difficult context, particularly for the country’s financial system,” said presidential advisor Fritz Alphonse Jean, welcomed by governor Ronald Gabriel.
“Faced with the major challenges that await us during this 18-month transition, with regard to the completion of the elections, the national dialogue, and the restoration of security in the country, I was pleased to learn that, despite certain difficulties linked to the credit portfolios of commercial banks, our financial system is quite solid,” he added.
In relation to the global financial system, everything is going rather well, reassured Fritz Alphonse Jean, despite the fact that Haiti has been placed in the grey zone in the latest report by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).
Presidential advisor Fritz Alphonse admits that the consequences of the crisis have led to the bankruptcy of some of the country’s institutions. “How do we get out of the crisis and back on track?” This question was also one of the points of discussion between BRH’s Board of Directors and presidential advisor Fritz Alphonse Jean. He recalls that some institutions were already in tatters even before the crisis worsened.
During his visit to the Banque de la République d’Haïti, presidential advisor Fritz Alphonse Jean took the opportunity to announce forthcoming changes to the board of directors of the Banque Nationale de Crédit (BNC).
Prior to his visit to BRH, Presidential Advisor Fritz Alphonse Jean had paid a courtesy visit to the Unité de Lutte Contre la Corruption (ULCC). He took the opportunity to support ULCC Director Hans L. Joseph in his efforts to combat corruption in public institutions. Fritz Jean calls on the Unité de Lutte Contre la Corruption (ULCC) and the Unité Centrale de Renseignement Financier (UCREF) to play their part in the fight against the scourge of corruption.
